Planning a Mysore to Kabini weekend drive? This is one of those short road trips that never feels ordinary. In about 80 km, Mysore slowly gives way to quieter roads, smaller towns, greener landscapes, and finally the calm, wild atmosphere that makes Kabini so memorable. The journey itself begins to feel like a break.
Route
Mysore -> Ring Road -> NH 275 to Hunsur -> SH 57 to HD Kote -> Kabini. Skip the Mysore-Ooty Road - take the HD Kote road via Hunsur instead. It's wider, better maintained, and passes through more interesting terrain.
Distance and travel time
The distance is around 80 km, taking 2 to 2.5 hours. That is exactly why it works so well as a weekend getaway from Mysore. You get the pleasure of a road trip without spending the whole day driving.
Best stops
Hunsur: Around 35 km from Mysore - good for coffee, fuel, or breakfast.
K Gudi: About 65 km in, the road forks. Bear left toward HD Kote. This stretch has the heaviest wildlife activity - drive slowly, especially between 6-8 AM.
HD Kote: Where KabiniKaanana is located - you'll find ATMs, pharmacies, petrol stations, and restaurants.
Tips
Leave around 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM. The road is more peaceful, the morning light makes the countryside look beautiful, and you arrive with the day still in front of you.
Download offline maps before you leave - connectivity can be intermittent on the forest road. Mornings and evenings in Kabini can feel cool between October and February, so carry a light jacket.
